Art in the Daintree

Various creative people have made the Daintree rainforest their home, this is a short and by no means complete introduction to some of the arts and artists in the region.

At the restaurant Whet in Cape Tribulation you will find, besides the best food in the area, this collection of massive timber barstools, chainsaw-carved from Kuranda Quandong salvaged from the Daintree rainforest.
They are for sale and a total of 5 are currently available, the perfect opportunity to give your bar or resort that special touch.

The creator of these bar stools is Rob Lapaer, a long term Cape Tribulation resident, who also does cement sculpture.
You can view these sculptures on the rainforest sculpture trail around Rainforest Hideaway on Camelot Close in Cape Tribulation.

Alison Gotts of the Cape Tribulation Exotic Fruit Farm is another local artist, and her paintings are inspired by the local Daintree flora and fauna, and the exotic fruit she grows at her farm.
Her paintings can be found at local Cape Trib venues such as the restaurant Whet and the Cape Trib Campground pizza place.

In Cow Bay there is Floravilla where local artist Betty Hinton displays her paintings of local flora and fauna.

Specializing in Australian Flora and Fauna, Betty Hinton's medium is watercolour on 100% cotton rag paper. Her botanical illustration is always painted from a live specimen giving her an intimacy with her subject. Very careful attention is given to botanical detail and colour matching but artistic license is applied to create a pleasing composition. Where possible fauna is painted from field observation.

Betty has had 13 solo exhibitions at major centres in eastern Australia, several commissions for 12 picture calendars, book illustrations and book dust jackets. By invitation Betty exhibited in conjunction with the Ellis Rowan Exhibition at the Cairns Regional Gallery where her paintings were hung with works by Robert Tucker and Sydney Parkinson. Parkinson was Capt Cooks botanical artist.

Recently Betty's illustration of Idiospermum which was purchased by
Dr. Shirley Sherwood was exhibited at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC. The exhibition was labelled by the Smithsonian as "Masterworks by the finest 20th Century artists".
